Sheila landed a job at a school in Mississauga, Ontario named for Philip Pocock. She felt this was a good omen as he was the Catholic Archbishop of Winnipeg who administered the Sacrement of Confirmation to her 43 years earlier. Her positive feelings about the school proved true as she stayed with Philip Pocock Catholic High School in Mississauga for the longest and most fulfilling part of her 35 years teaching.
During the 1990's Sheila would face new challenges, experiencing first hand how the politicization of her profession and deep funding cuts to education would undermine the gains made in special education during the 1980's. While some sat idly by, she became an active advocate for the quality of special education. Sheila was active in the fight to restore the quality of education and reputation of teachers in Ontario.
Sheila was a vocal member of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) and an active supporter of politicians who supported improvements in education. She fought from 1995 until 2003 and succeeded in bringing about a change in government resulting in the restoration of education funding and the rehabilitation of the reputation of the teaching profession.
In her 35 years teaching Sheila has participated in, led and mastered incredible growth and changes in the education system. Thanks to her continued dedication and love for teaching, she has touched the lives of countless children and earned the love of her students, the respect of their parents and her teaching colleagues, and the gratitude of her community.
In 2005, Sheila was recognized by her peers when she was awarded "Teacher of the Year" in Dufferin Peel by the Canadian Council for Exceptional Children.
Sheila's career began much the same as it will conclude in 2006, serving and teaching students while maintaining a Catholic commitment to educating the whole person. She has been committed throughout her career to well balanced education provided in the context of a caring Christian community.
Bravo and enjoy your retirement! ![]()
